Fleet Safety
The purpose of the ACIG Fleet Safety Program is to provide guidelines and procedures for shareholder employees to utilize in carrying out their assignments and responsibilities. This pertains to ACIG Contractor owned, leased, or personal vehicles driven on company business.
The ACIG Fleet Safety Program has been instituted to promote safe vehicle operation by our members’ fleet drivers, to reduce the frequency and severity of losses associated with our vehicle operations and to promote positive customer and public relations.
Fleet Safety Best Practices Minimum Guidelines
The Best Practices listed in this document will serve as the minimum guidelines for all companies whose Auto Liability Coverage is provided by ACIG Insurance Company.
Written Fleet Safety Program
- The company should have Fleet Safety Guidelines incorporated into their overall Risk Management Guidelines.
- Review the Risk Management Guidelines including the Fleet Safety Mission Guidelines on at least an annual basis.
Management Support of Program
- Management should participate in the development of the Fleet Safety Guidelines.
- Management should support the Fleet Safety Administrator with adequate resources (time, staff, and budget).
- Management should participate in the annual review of the Risk Management Guidelines including the Fleet Safety Guidelines.
Fleet Safety Administrator
Each company should have a fleet safety administrator. This individual should:
- Be responsible for coordinating the initial set-up and continued operation of the company Fleet Safety and report to the company management on at least an annual basis.
- Participate in a review of all accident and incident claims at least annually, but more frequently if indicated by internal or external audits.
- Conduct a driver file review on at least an annual basis.
- Assist with accident/incident investigations.
- Have basic fleet safety training.
- Have continuing education in some phase of fleet management at least annually.
- Be responsible for the company’s fleet safety education program.
- Supervise DOT compliance.
- Supervise HAZMAT compliance.
- Supervise DOT Homeland Security compliance.
- Maintain a “ drive / no drive” list.
This fleet safety program should address issues on the basis of:
- DOT (CDL)
- Non-DOT (non-CDL) regulated basis
